Late Summer/Early Fall Harvest
September 21, 2017
It's officially fall! Happy first day of fall, everyone!
As much as I'm so close to shedding a tear that summer has indeed ended, I've come to terms with it, especially since fall does have some pretty awesome things to offer. Leaves are changing colours, and there's an abundance of sweet fruit and delicious fall veg.
Late summer harvests are actually pretty awesome since a lot of fruit have an intensified sweetness, which means some extra sweet baking with less the sugar!
Another fun reason to go for late harvests is the fact that it's not too hot out. Although I must admit, the weather here in Toronto has been pretty funky that I was absolutely sweating during the harvest.
It's also cool because during this time, if you pick the right farm to go to, they'll have a mix of summer and fall fruit to pick from. We got lucky coz we found a pretty sweet farm, Andrew's Scenic Acres , which has so many different fruit and veg to pick from, and not only that, they also have their own winery! They make a variety of wines from traditional reds and whites, but also all sorts of fruit wines like peach, berry currants, and lots more! They even have fruit infused Ice Wines!
Check out this map of their HUGE property! As you can see, they even have locations of where you can catch a tractor that you can pop on that will take you to the different locations on the farm.
Here we are catching one! Next stop, berry picking!
At this time, they had mostly fall produce, but then also had some raspberries and blueberries to gather, which was pretty awesome considering we really just wanted to pick apples but ended up picking a lot more than just that.
Now we also got to enjoy the usual fall-picking activities such as apple and pumpkin picking. As you can see below, I had a pretty sweet pick of a really funky gourd who decided he wanted to look like a starfish!
As the sun rose high above the fields, we decided to take a little break and cool down with the farm's very own frozen fruit-blended ice creams and frozen yogurt. They make it right before your eyes, and here I had mine in peach frozen yogurt - delish!
A fun little surprise apart from the golden raspberries and blueberries was the field of pick-your-own Dahlias. It was definitely a sight to behold and was for sure a photographer, and flower-admirer's paradise.
Now all in all, Andrew's Scenic Acres is by far my favourite farm that I have been to. Some of the pickings were pretty slim, but the fact that you can enjoy picking from their other selection of produce and flowers, you're sure to discover some pretty awesome things at their farm.
